Vanity top materials we fit

These are the materials we fit on bathroom vanities. Most have their own page.

  • Quartz. NIOSH, part of the CDC, says engineered stone is also known as quartz. A report in the CDC's library says engineered stone is made of crushed stone bound by resins, with added pigments. See quartz countertops.
  • Granite. The U.S. Geological Survey says granite is made mostly of minerals, quartz among them, that resist acid. See granite countertops.
  • Quartzite. The U.S. Geological Survey says quartzite is a rock made mostly of quartz, formed from sandstone. See quartzite countertops.
  • Marble. The U.S. Geological Survey says calcite, the mineral marble is mostly made of, dissolves readily in weak acid. On a marble vanity we fit, we'd keep acidic cleaners off the top. See marble countertops.
  • Solid surface. U.S. Customs and Border Protection ruled on a solid surface sheet made for kitchen and bath counters. It says that sheet is made of acrylic resin and aluminum hydroxide filler, and it classes the sheet as a plastic. See solid surface countertops.
  • Cultured marble. We fit this man-made top too. There is more on it in the questions below.

Water, steam and mold

We think about water first on a bathroom vanity, since it gets wet every day. The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control. It also says places that are often or always damp can be hard to keep completely free of mold.

The EPA says running a fan or opening a window, and cleaning more often, will usually stop mold in a bathroom from coming back, or at least keep it to a minimum. When we set a vanity top, we seal the joint where the top meets the wall so water from the sink can't run down behind it.

What sets the price of a vanity top

We price bathroom vanity tops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the material you choose, the size of the top, the edge you pick, how many sinks it holds, and how many holes we cut for the faucets.

If you're redoing the kitchen as well, we can quote kitchen countertops on the same visit.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The material, brand, color name and thickness of the top.
  • The size of the top, and where each sink and faucet hole will be cut.
  • Whether the sink is a separate bowl or part of the same top.
  • Which edge you are getting.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old top is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and drain.

Questions about bathroom vanity tops in Lewisville

Is cultured marble real marble?

No. The cultured marble we fit is part stone and part plastic. U.S. Customs and Border Protection had its lab test a cultured marble made for the bathroom walls around a tub. The lab found the material was about 71% dolomite and calcite, mixed evenly through a polymer. On the tops we fit, a plastic resin holds those minerals together.

Which vanity top is easiest to keep clean?

A design guide from the Department of Veterans Affairs describes a solid surface countertop as nonporous, smooth, and with no seams that show. On the solid surface we fit, nonporous means there are no tiny holes in the top for water to soak into. The guide says the top is easy to clean and, with proper cleaning, does not support the growth of mold. If easy cleaning matters most to you, we'd point you to solid surface.

How should I clean mold off a vanity top?

The EPA says to scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and then dry them completely.

What if my vanity has had a leak under the sink?

The EPA says to fix plumbing leaks as soon as you can. It says that if wet areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak, in most cases mold will not grow. We'd look at the cabinet with you before we fit a new top on it.

Should I pick a new faucet at the same time?

If you're choosing one anyway, the EPA says WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets use at most 1.5 gallons per minute. It says that can cut a sink's water flow by 30% or more from the standard 2.2 gallons per minute.

Do I need a permit for a new vanity top in Lewisville?

The City of Lewisville lists cosmetic projects, such as replacing cabinets or installing carpet, as not needing a building permit, and it suggests calling its Building Services staff to confirm. If a permit is needed, the city says you should never apply for it on behalf of your contractor. If your job moves a sink or changes the plumbing, we'll make that call to the city with you before we start.

Can you make a vanity top with two sinks?

Yes, we can cut a vanity top for two sinks if your cabinet is wide enough to hold them.

Can you replace just the top and keep my vanity cabinet?

Yes, we can fit a new top on the cabinet you have, as part of a countertop replacement job.

Can you fix a chip in my vanity top?

Send us a photo, or ask us to come and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the top should be replaced.
