Lewisville Countertops repairs countertops in homes across Lewisville. We come and look at the damage first, then tell you whether a repair will hold or the piece should be replaced.
What we repair
We fill chips and small cracks in granite, marble and quartz tops, then smooth the repair so it sits level with the rest of the counter. We also redo seams that have opened up or gone dark, and reseal sinks that have pulled away from the counter.
On the solid surface tops we work on, we can sand out light scratches and blend the spot back in.
Dull spots on marble
The U.S. Geological Survey says calcite, the mineral marble is mostly made of, dissolves readily in weak acid. So when we look at a dull ring on a marble top, we check whether acid has worn into the stone before we decide how to polish it back.
Splits in butcher block
The USDA Forest Service's wood handbook says the moisture left in dried wood tends to even out with the humidity of the air around it. It says protective coatings can slow the changes in size that come with that, but do not stop them. On a butcher block top with a split, we sand the area, fill the gap and oil the wood again.
Water under the sink
We reseal sinks with caulk, a soft paste that sets into a waterproof seal around the edge. Before we do, we check the cabinet below for water. The EPA says to fix plumbing leaks as soon as possible and dry everything completely. It says that if wet materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak or spill, in most cases mold will not grow.
The EPA also says not to caulk over moldy surfaces. If we find mold under an old seal, we stop and tell you, and we only put new caulk down once the mold is cleaned up and the area is dry.
Dust and fumes during a repair
OSHA says grinding, cutting or drilling stone creates crystalline silica dust, in particles far smaller than sand. It says breathing in that dust can cause silicosis, a lung disease that cannot be cured.
NIOSH, part of the CDC, says engineered stone is also known as quartz. A report in the CDC's library says engineered stone usually contains more than 90% crystalline silica, against about 30% for granite. Where a repair needs grinding, we keep the dust down and ask you to keep children and pets out of the room.
The EPA lists glues and adhesives among the products that give off VOCs, which are gases that come off some solids and liquids. It says to increase fresh air when using them, so we open a window or run the vent fan while the repair sets.
What sets the price of a repair
We price a countertop repair once we've seen the damage, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the material, how big the damage is, how many spots need work, and whether the sink or the cooktop, the burners set into the counter, has to come out first.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- Each spot that will be repaired, and how.
- Whether the filler will be tinted to match your top.
- Whether the sink, faucet or cooktop has to be taken out.
- What the repair will cost, and what is not included.
Questions about countertop repair in Lewisville
Should I repair my countertop or replace it?
Send us a photo, or ask us to come and look. If the damage runs through the whole piece, we'll quote a countertop replacement next to the repair so you can compare.
Can you repair a quartz countertop?
Yes, we can fill chips in quartz. A report in the CDC's library says engineered stone is made of crushed stone bound by resins, with added pigments, so we tint our filler to the color of your top.
Will the repair show?
We show you the tinted filler next to your top before we use it. On stone with a lot of pattern, we'll tell you before we start if the spot may still show up close.
Do I need a permit for countertop repair in Lewisville?
The City of Lewisville lists cosmetic projects, such as replacing cabinets or installing carpet, as not needing a building permit, and it suggests calling its Building Services staff to confirm. If a permit is needed, the city says you should never apply for it on behalf of your contractor. If your repair turns into moving a sink or changing the plumbing, we'll make that call to the city with you before we start.
Can you fix a burn mark?
Send us a photo first, and we'll tell you whether we can sand or polish the mark out, or whether that part of the top has to be replaced.
Can you repair a laminate countertop?
Yes, we can glue down an edge strip that has come loose on laminate. If the top is burned through or has swollen from water, we'd quote new kitchen countertops instead.
Do you repair bathroom vanity tops?
Yes, we can repair chips and cracks on bathroom vanity tops as well as kitchen counters.
