Kitchen countertop materials we fit

These are the materials we fit in kitchens. Each one has its own page, linked below.

  • Quartz. NIOSH, part of the CDC, says engineered stone is also known as quartz. A report in the CDC's library says engineered stone is made of crushed stone bound by resins, with added pigments, and that it has become the most used countertop material in the United States. See quartz countertops.
  • Granite. The U.S. Geological Survey says granite is a rock that people have used for building for thousands of years. See granite countertops.
  • Quartzite. The U.S. Geological Survey says quartzite is a rock made mostly of quartz, formed from sandstone. See quartzite countertops.
  • Marble. The U.S. Geological Survey says calcite, the mineral marble is mostly made of, dissolves readily in weak acid. See marble countertops.
  • Solid surface. U.S. Customs and Border Protection ruled on a solid surface sheet made for kitchen and bath counters. It says that sheet is made of acrylic resin and aluminum hydroxide filler, and it classes the sheet as a plastic. See solid surface countertops.
  • Butcher block. The USDA Forest Service's wood handbook says the moisture left in dried wood tends to even out with the humidity of the air around it. See butcher block countertops.
  • Concrete. The Federal Highway Administration says the basic parts of concrete are crushed stone or gravel, sand, portland cement and water. See concrete countertops.
  • Porcelain. The EPA says firing turns a ceramic into a dense, solid body made of fine, even grains. It says this step is also called sintering. See porcelain countertops.

Silica dust when stone is cut

OSHA says the highest crystalline silica levels are associated with quartzite and with certain engineered stones. NIOSH, part of the CDC, says silica dust causes silicosis, a lung disease that cannot be reversed. OSHA says the dust comes from cutting, grinding, edging and shaping stone, in the shop and on the job site where the finishing is done. It tells stone shops to avoid dry cutting, and to use water to keep the dust down when finishing work has to happen on site. Whoever you hire, ask them where your slab will be cut and how they keep the dust down.

What sets the price of kitchen countertops

We price kitchen countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the material you choose, how much counter we cover, whether there is an island, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop, the burners set into the counter.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The material, brand, color name and thickness.
  • A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
  • Which edge you are getting.
  • Where the slab will be cut and shaped.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.

Questions about kitchen countertops in Lewisville

Which countertop is best for my kitchen?

We'd ask how you cook and what look you want, then bring samples of a few materials to your kitchen so you can see them next to your cabinets and under your lights before you choose.

Which countertops stand up to lemon juice and vinegar?

The U.S. Geological Survey says granite is made mostly of minerals, quartz among them, that resist acid. If you cook with a lot of citrus or vinegar, we'd point you to granite before marble.

Should I worry about radon from a granite countertop?

The EPA says it is extremely unlikely that radiation from granite countertops would raise your yearly dose above normal background levels. It recommends testing all homes for radon, whether or not they have granite countertops.

How should I clean a kitchen countertop?

FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. On any countertop we fit, we'd still set hot pans on a stand or pad and use a cutting board for knives.

Do I need a permit for new kitchen countertops in Lewisville?

The City of Lewisville lists cosmetic projects, such as replacing cabinets or installing carpet, as not needing a building permit, and it suggests calling its Building Services staff to confirm. If a permit is needed, the city says you should never apply for it on behalf of your contractor. If your job moves a sink or changes the plumbing, we'll make that call to the city with you before we start.

Can you fit a countertop on my kitchen island?

Yes, we can measure and fit the island top along with the rest of the kitchen.

Can you replace my old laminate countertops?

Yes, we can take out old laminate or tile tops and fit a new material in their place as part of a countertop replacement job.

Can you put in a backsplash at the same time?

Yes, we can. Once the countertops are set, we do backsplash installation, facing the strip of wall just above the counter with tile or stone that goes with it.
