What concrete is made of

The Federal Highway Administration says the basic parts of concrete are crushed stone or gravel, sand, portland cement and water. It says the stone and sand fill out the mix, and a hardened cement paste, formed when the cement reacts with water, holds them together.

The same source says portland cement is usually about 15 percent of the mix by weight. We fit concrete tops on kitchen counters, islands and bathroom vanities.

How concrete sets

The Federal Highway Administration says portland cement sets and hardens by reacting with water to form a stonelike mass. It also says other materials are often added as the concrete is mixed, to change how it behaves while fresh or once it has hardened.

What sets the price of concrete

We price concrete countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the color and finish you choose, how thick the top is, how much counter we cover, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop.

Not sure about concrete? We can quote it side by side with granite, quartz or soapstone.

Looking after concrete

FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. On any concrete we fit, we'd still set hot pans on a stand or pad and use a cutting board for knives.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The color, the finish and the thickness of each concrete top.
  • Whether you get to see a sample of the color and finish before the top is made.
  • A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
  • Which edge you are getting.
  • Whether the concrete will be sealed, and with what.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.

Questions about concrete countertops in Lewisville

Does cutting concrete make silica dust?

OSHA says concrete contains crystalline silica, and that very fine silica dust is made when concrete is cut, sawed, ground or drilled. It says breathing that dust raises the risk of silicosis, an incurable lung disease, as well as lung cancer and kidney disease.

How much of concrete is stone and sand?

The Federal Highway Administration says the stone and sand make up about 80 to 85 percent of the mix by mass.

Is concrete the same as quartz?

No. NIOSH, part of the CDC, says engineered stone is also known as quartz. The concrete we fit is made from cement, sand and stone, and if you'd rather have an engineered stone top, we also fit quartz countertops.

Do I need a permit for new concrete countertops in Lewisville?

The City of Lewisville lists cosmetic projects, such as replacing cabinets or installing carpet, as not needing a building permit, and it suggests calling its Building Services staff to confirm. If a permit is needed, the city says you should never apply for it on behalf of your contractor. If your job moves a sink or changes the plumbing, we'll make that call to the city with you before we start.

Can I choose the color of my concrete countertops?

Yes, we can go through colors and finishes with you and show you a sample before your top is made.

Can you put concrete in a bathroom?

Yes, we can fit concrete on bathroom vanity tops as well as in the kitchen.

Can you fix a crack or a chip in a concrete countertop?

Send us a photo, or ask us to come and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the piece should be replaced.
