What porcelain is made of

The U.S. Department of Commerce puts porcelain tile in the same group as other ceramic tile. It says ceramic tile is made from a mix of minerals, clay among them, that is fired so the raw materials fuse together.

The EPA says most ceramic products start as clay, either on its own or mixed with other minerals, quartz among them.

Porcelain slabs

The same Commerce order covers ceramic tile slabs and panels, which it describes as tiles larger than 1 square meter, or 11 square feet. We fit porcelain slabs on kitchen counters, islands and bathroom vanities.

How porcelain is fired

The EPA says firing turns a ceramic into a dense, solid body made of fine, even grains. It says this step is also called sintering.

What sets the price of porcelain

We price porcelain countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the slab you choose, how thick it is, how much counter we cover, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop.

Not sure about porcelain? We can quote it side by side with quartz, granite or quartzite.

Looking after porcelain

FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. On any porcelain we fit, we'd still set hot pans on a stand or pad and use a cutting board for knives.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The name of the porcelain and the thickness of the slab.
  • Whether you get to see and approve the exact slab before it is cut.
  • A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
  • Which edge and which finish you are getting.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.

Questions about porcelain countertops in Lewisville

Does cutting porcelain make silica dust?

OSHA says crystalline silica is used to make products such as ceramics, and that making ceramic products and stone countertops exposes workers to silica dust. It says breathing that dust raises the risk of silicosis, an incurable lung disease, as well as lung cancer and kidney disease.

Is porcelain the same as quartz?

No. NIOSH, part of the CDC, says engineered stone is also known as quartz. The porcelain we fit is a fired ceramic, and if you'd rather have an engineered stone top, we also fit quartz countertops.

Do I need a permit for new porcelain countertops in Lewisville?

The City of Lewisville lists cosmetic projects, such as replacing cabinets or installing carpet, as not needing a building permit, and it suggests calling its Building Services staff to confirm. If a permit is needed, the city says you should never apply for it on behalf of your contractor. If your job moves a sink or changes the plumbing, we'll make that call to the city with you before we start.

Can I pick my own porcelain slab?
